Implementing multi-factor authentication with cookies in JavaScript

In today’s digital world, security is of utmost importance. One way to enhance the security of your website or application is by implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring users to provide additional information or evidence in addition to a password.

One approach to implementing MFA is by using cookies in JavaScript. Cookies are small files stored on a user’s computer that can be used to store information about the user’s session. We can leverage cookies to provide a seamless MFA experience for our users. Let’s see how we can accomplish this.

1. Generate a User Token

When a user successfully logs in with their username and password, we can generate a user token on the server-side. This token should be unique and securely generated. 2. Prompt for Additional Authentication

After the user receives the user token, we can prompt them for additional authentication factors, such as a one-time password (OTP) sent to their registered email or mobile number. Once the user provides the additional authentication factor, we can validate it on the server-side.

Once the additional authentication factor is validated, we can set an authentication cookie on the user’s browser. This cookie should contain information to identify the user, such as a user ID or a session ID. We can also set the expiration time for this cookie.

4. Accessing Authenticated Routes

From this point onwards, whenever the user accesses the authenticated routes on our website or application, we can check for the presence and validity of the authentication cookie. If the cookie is present and valid, the user is allowed to access the protected resources; otherwise, they are redirected to the login page or denied access.
