The Challenge of Side Effects

In a Redux application, side effects can occur when an action triggers an asynchronous operation. Traditionally, developers would use middleware, such as Redux Thunk or Redux Saga, to handle these side effects. While effective, this approach introduces additional boilerplate and complexity to the codebase.

Enter Redux Toolkit

Redux Toolkit offers a built-in solution for managing side effects through its createAsyncThunk function. This function allows us to define async actions without the need for middleware. Here’s an example of how it works:

These actions represent different states of the asynchronous operation (pending, fulfilled, and rejected).

The extraReducers field in the slice defines how the state should be updated based on the different async actions. In this example, when the fetchUser.fulfilled action is dispatched, we update the state with the fetched user data.

Handling Errors

Redux Toolkit also provides an elegant way to handle asynchronous errors. By default, if an async action’s promise rejects, Redux Toolkit dispatches the corresponding rejected action. However, we can further customize error handling by providing a second argument to createAsyncThunk:
