Implementing task queues and background processing with Redux Toolkit

In many web applications, there are tasks that take a long time to complete or are computationally expensive. These tasks can cause the user interface to freeze or slow down, resulting in a poor user experience. To mitigate this issue, we can leverage task queues and background processing.

Task queues allow us to enqueue tasks and process them asynchronously, freeing up the main thread for other operations. Redux Toolkit provides a convenient way to implement task queues and background processing with its built-in middleware called createAsyncThunk.

Setting Up Redux Toolkit

Before we dive into implementing task queues, let’s first set up Redux Toolkit in our application. Install Redux Toolkit by running the following command:

Next, create a Redux store using the configureStore function from Redux Toolkit:

Handling Async Actions in Reducers

To handle the result of the async action in reducers, Redux Toolkit provides the extraReducers option in createSlice. Here’s an example of how to handle the async action:
