Implementing JWT refresh tokens in a JavaScript application

In modern web applications, using JSON Web Tokens (JWT) for authentication and authorization has become a popular choice. JWTs are commonly used to securely transmit user information between the client and the server.

However, JWTs come with their own set of challenges, one being that they have an expiration time. Once the token expires, the user needs to reauthenticate to obtain a new token. This can lead to a poor user experience, as users are often forced to repeatedly log in.

To address this issue, we can implement JWT refresh tokens. Refresh tokens are long-lived tokens that can be used to acquire a new access token without the need for users to reauthenticate. In this article, we will explore how to implement JWT refresh tokens in a JavaScript application.

Step 1: Generating Refresh Tokens

When a user successfully logs in to your application, along with the access token, you should also generate and return a refresh token. The refresh token should be securely stored on the server side and associated with the user.

To generate a refresh token in JavaScript, you can use a library like jsonwebtoken. Here’s an example of how you can generate a refresh token:

Step 2: Handling Refresh Token Requests

In your server-side code, you need to handle requests for refreshing access tokens using the refresh token. This typically involves verifying the refresh token’s validity, retrieving the associated user ID, and generating a new access token.

Here’s an example of how this can be done using Node.js and Express:

On the client side, you need to handle token expiration and refresh token requests. When an access token expires, you can catch the error and send a request to your server-side /refresh-token endpoint to obtain a new access token.
